Rewards

A stick and a carrot?

Rewards! This is what every player seeks in a game. There are two types of rewards, permanent and temporary. The “Master Sword” is a permanent reward the gamer gets in The Legend of Zelda, that lasts throughout the game, whilst the Mushrooms earned in Super Mario only last a certain amount of time. This is like playing Pacman, where the player is able to eat the ghosts for a short period of time. On average, permanent rewards may be gained through harder challenges or bigger accomplishments.

According to a publication, it is psychologically proven that when rewards are given fairly, then the player is trained to expect a reward following similar processes. There must be some sort of consistency to this methodology throughout the game. If this fails to be the case repeatedly, the participants will become disappointed and simply give up trying. Nothing wrong with a player deciding that they are just not ready enough to play a certain game due to lack of skill. Another player may find it interesting and challenging. Nevertheless, a badly treated player creates bad publicity for the game and its future success. After all, it is the user experience that makes word of mouth go around.
