There is a reason that spearfishing with scuba gear is looked down upon and that is because it is unfair for the fish. Any person with enough patience and a large enough oxygen tank can wait practically forever until a fish comes by; however, holding your breath for a long period of time requires practice, skill, and perseverance. This way of thinking is used in many successful games and is what strives players to keep going. By spoiling your user, they may feel like the game is becoming too easy, therefore, causing them to lose all interest in it. For example, if you had unlimited lives in Super Mario, it would become boring and ultimately there would be no point to the game. On the other hand, if in a game like Minecraft it was impossible to get any resource necessary to survive, the game would become extremely frustrating and no longer fun to play. Nonetheless, if an item in a game is considered to have greater value, then it should be more tedious to obtain. By always having something to progress towards, players will endeavour to better themselves and improve.
